The Extended Range feature allows Ericsson GSM system with a
possibility of carrying traf?c at a larger radius, of up to 121 km, from
the base station than the normal GSM range of 35 kilometres. The
gain in cell radius with Extended Range is done with the reduction of
cell capacity. Extended range cells are suitable in sparsely populated
areas with low transmission loss such as deserts, coastal areas and
remote constructions (e.g. oil rigs)..
