This document addresses selected radio frequency engineering topics for the Lucent implementation of CDMA2000 1xEVDO (enhanced version data only), formerly known as HDR (high data rate).

The 1xEV Radio Access Network (1xEV RAN) provides a high-speed, high-capacity access solution targeting the increased market demand for wireless data and Internet applications. The 1xEV RAN is a packet data access network using a 1xEV air interface protocol that can connect to an IP-based network. The 1xEV air interface protocol is defined as an evolution to the cdma2000 3G-1x protocol, optimized for packet data service.1xEV supports packet data services and does not support voice services. 1xEV uses a dedicated 1.23 MHz carrier that can be deployed adjacent to IS-95/cdma2000 carriers.1xEV is described in 3GPP2 C.S0024 and TIA/EIA/IS-856.

In spite of differences, many of the RF engineering principles of 1xEV are similar to those of CDMA2000 3G1X and IS-95. In particular the reverse link is almost identical to 3G1X. Accordingly, this document does not offer extensive discussions of topics that are more thoroughly covered in either the 3G1X or IS-95 RF Engineering Guidelines; rather, the focus is on treatment of aspects that differ.References to other guidelines are provided, as appropriate, throughout the text.
