The high capacity RNC 3820 is the response to the rapid changes in the traffic situation in WCDMA networks. In the early WCDMA networks, the traffic was predominantly voice, with a small amount of data and video telephony. While voice is growing steadily but moderately, the uptake of data traffic is dramatic in many networks.
The RNC 3810 was developed to cater for a wide range of traffic situations. It was optimized for a balanced case where the voice traffic is a substantial part. Field experience has proven that the RNC 3810 is able to handle the data traffic increase without problems, and will continue to do so. As the data traffic uptake continues, the ability to handle large data volumes at low cost becomes increasingly important in order to support more aggressive mobile broadband offerings.
The increase in data traffic is far from uniform; it depends strongly on the operator strategies and decisions. Therefore, the traffic situations in different networks, and in different places within networks, become increasingly varied. The RNC 3820 can manage this diverging traffic trends by a more flexible deployment of HW and SW.
A centralized RNC is an attractive solution for WCDMA RAN also in the new data centric traffic scenarios. A significant part of the data traffic is in the uplink direction, where Soft Handover provides substantially higher spectrum efficiency and coverage. In addition, the RNC gives a large trunking gain for the processing involved. Thus, the RNC is cost-efficient and provides end-user value, reducing the total RAN cost and improving the performance of the network.
