3G provides a natural successor to GSM by building upon
GSM’s proven SIM card roaming model, yet offering much more spectrum for voice services
whilst enabling a much wider variety of data and multimedia services.
Some commentators, no doubt with vested interests in the fixed line market, have argued
that WiFi access technology will kill 3G before it is even born. While the wireless Local
Area Network (LAN) market certainly has a future, it will never provide anything like the
same geographical coverage as 3G and the network investment economics are far from
proven. In other words, the two technologies are likely to be complementary.
From a commercial perspective, there is a clear cut economic case to be made for 3G.
While the licence and infrastructure investments have been immense, 3G provides long term
reductions in the cost of carrying both voice and data traffic, at least in urban and suburban
areas. The ability to increase Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) by providing new value
added data services will ensure these investments are recouped, probably sooner than many
expect.
It is important not to underestimate the challenges that lie ahead for the 3G industry. The
most pressing topics include resolving interoperability issues (both amongst operators and
handset manufacturers), agreement on standards evolution and ensuring that the customer’s
service quality expectations are met.
