This Description presents how to dimension the Ericsson Radio Network
Controller (RNC) node in a radio network. The intended readers are radio
network design engineers involved in the planning, design, or maintenance of a
Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) radio network.
The document is intended to support engineers in their complex task of
planning a correctly dimensioned UTRAN. As the quality of the planning result
is dependent on the input data and on an understanding of the limitations of the
procedures and methods used, it is strongly recommended to involve Ericsson
in the tasks covered by this document.
Dimensioning is often an iterative process. The result of the RNC dimensioning
may, for example, suggest moving Radio Network System (RNS) borders,
which in turn may affect transmission network or Location Area (LA) or Routing
Area (RA) borders, which may require additional dimensioning efforts.
Note that this document describes not the characteristics of the RNC as
a product, but a method for dimensioning the RNC in a real network. The
performance level of an RNC used in a real network might deviate from its stated
characteristics. The reasons for such deviations could be applied planning
margins, geographical aspects, a different user behavior (traffic and mobility
model) than assumed when deriving the nominal characteristics, and so on
