Spanish mobile network provider AireNetworks has announced its acquisition of the licences in the 2.6 GHz bandfreed up by Orange Spain as part of its merger with Jazztel, reportsTelecompaper.com on January 18, 2016. Aire Networks, which operates under theIon Mobile brand, already uses the 2.6 GHz band in the Spanish regions of Extremaduraand Valencia, and will now use the newly-acquired licences to roll out 4Gservices in over 500 localities in the regions of Andalucia, Aragon, CanaryIslands, Balearic Islands and Castilla-Leon.
The 2.6 GHz frequencies were divestedfollowing the approval of Orange's takeover of Jazztel in May, with theoperators MasMovil Ibercom or Yoigo widely expected to acquire thecorresponding licences. However, Yoigo and MasMovil may still bid for spectrumin the 2.6 GHz freed up following Vodafone Spain's acquisition of Ono in July2014.
